El Colado

Composed and Arranged by Bob Thurston

Bob doesn’t write for big band very often – he’s usually off with the concert band crowd, slurping Gewürtztraminer and getting goat cheese caught in his cummerbund. That might help explain the title of this part funky, part saucy, all fun Latin original: “El Colado” is South American slang for “party crasher.” The chart features plenty of mood swings – an aggressive opening and a funky A mixed with a quasi-samba B, followed by alto and piano solo choruses. And then the party breaks out, with a bouncy breakdown featuring solo trumpet and some ensemble-drummer trades before the whole thing rocks out to a loud and funky finish. “El Colado” is heavy on saxes and groove – it could be just the chart to turn your set into a fiesta![Instrumentation: 5 saxes, 8 brass, 4 rhythm]
