Doin' the Shake

Composed and Arranged by Shawn Purcell

John Scofield meets Tower of Power in this all-out funk chart. "Doin' the Shake" features solos for the guitar and tenor saxophone 1 and also employs sound effects such as overdrive for the modern guitarist. In place of a traditional full band shout chorus, Doin’ the Shake contains two interludes, the first of which employs beautiful cluster voicings in the brass, while bringing the electric bass to the forefront as part of the melodic team. During this interlude the trumpets switch briefly to Flugelhorns to add to the beauty of the clusters. The pianist also has the choice of utilizing keyboards, and could incorporate a Fender Rhodes type of sound if accessible. Guaranteed to excite the band as well as the audience! [Instrumentation: 5 saxes, 8 brass, 4 rhythm]
