Miller's Modes

Composed and Arranged by Steve Williams

Miller's Modes: Straight ahead, 1/4 note = 186. This is modal in the sense that the voicings and solos are built on scales rather than functional harmony. Begins with a bass/left hand piano melody (and drums) that is contrapuntal once the melody is stated by flute, alto and muted trumpet. AABA with an unusual 15 bar bridge over a pseudo-Latin groove. Solos for bass, alto and trombone, each in its own unique setting. There's an involved brass soli over a vamp. Doubles for saxes 1-4, Trumpet 1 to written G (briefly and once).[Instrumentation: 5 saxes, 8 brass, 4 rhythm]
